EU-onderzoekscommissie Malta: "De rechtsstaat staat onder druk"

Na recente ontwikkelingen in de moord op de Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia heeft het Europees Parlement een delegatie parlementsleden naar Valetta gestuurd om de situatie ter plaatse te onderzoeken en te evalueren. De delegatie, waaronder N-VA-Europarlementslid Assita Kanko, ontmoette de premier, de president, de procureur-generaal, ngo's en de familie van vermoorde journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

De delegatie omvat N-VA-Europarlementslid Assita Kanko, die de ECR-groep in het Europees Parlement vertegenwoordigt.

Sprekend vanuit Valetta benadrukte zij haar zorgen en conclusies na het bezoek: “De media voelen zich geïntimideerd en het vertrouwen van burgers in hun regering is geschokt. Na de afgelopen twee dagen met veel mensen te hebben gesproken, zijn er heel wat ernstige vragen opgedoken. Vragen die nog onbeantwoord zijn gebleven.”

“De voorwaarden voor een goed functionerende rechtsstaat staan ​​onder grote druk. Er zijn duidelijke belangenconflicten, een gebrek aan transparantie en vage lijnen van verantwoording tussen hoge politie- en politieke ambtenaren.

“Het is duidelijk dat de regering en de premier een gebrek aan morele autoriteit en publiek vertrouwen hebben. Het is moeilijk te schatten hoe deze situatie in de toekomst zal evolueren.

“Daphne Caruana Galizia schreef over het witwassen van geld, corruptie, de verkoop van EU-paspoorten en een gebrek aan transparantie in het politieke systeem; daardoor is ze vermoord.

“De kwesties waarover ze schreef, hebben een domino-effect in de hele Europese Unie. Daarom heeft de EU een verantwoordelijkheid tegenover de bevolking van Malta en alle lidstaten om ervoor te zorgen dat de vrijheid van meningsuiting en de rechtsstaat prevaleren.”

Achtergrondinformatie

De ad hoc enquêtecommissie is sinds dinsdagavond in het land. De EU-parlementsleden (één uit elke fractie) hebben sindsdien gesproken met de Maltese premier en minister van Justitie, de president, de officier van justitie en andere politieke figuren. Ze namen ook veel tijd om te praten met de familie van de vermoorde journalist, samen met vertegenwoordigers van talloze NGO's, advocaten en vooral journalisten.

EU Investigation Commission Malta: "The rule of law is under pressure"

Following recent developments in the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the European Parliament has sent a delegation of elected members to Valetta to investigate and evaluate the situation on the ground. The delegation met with the Prime Minister, the President, the Attorney General, NGOs and the family of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The delegation includes Assita Kanko MEP, who represents the European Conservatives & Reformists Group in the European Parliament. 

Speaking from Valetta she highlighted her concerns and conclusions following the visit: 

“The media feel intimidated and the trust of citizens in their Government is shaken. Having spoken with many people over the last two days, we have come away with serious and unanswered questions.

“The conditions for a well-functioning constitutional state are under great pressure. There are clear conflicts of interest, a lack of transparency, and blurred lines of accountability among senior police and political officials. 

“It is clear that the Government and the Prime Minister lack moral authority and public confidence. It is hard to see how this situation is sustainable going forward.  

“Daphne Caruana Galizia wrote about money laundering, corruption, the practice of selling EU passports, and a lack of transparency in the political system; something that she was murdered for. 

“The issues she wrote about have a knock on effect throughout the European Union. Therefore, the EU has a responsibility to the people of Malta and all Member States to ensure freedom of speech and the rule of law prevails.”

FOR BACKGROUND:

The ad hoc committee of inquiry has been in the country since Tuesday evening. The EU MPs (one from each political group) have since spoken with the Maltese Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, the President, the Public Prosecutor and other political figures. They also took extensive time to talk to the murdered journalist's family, along with representatives from numerous NGOs, lawyers and especially journalists.
